Water the Rose Despite Its Thorns

Water the Rose Despite Its Thorns

We never hesitate to pick a rose despite the fact that the thorns can prick us; similarly, we should not be afraid to take risks and love people who may not seem to deserve it. Everyone is flawed and make mistakes every now and then but why focus on them? Focus on what you like about people and be empathetic to bring out peace and happiness in your life.

This story of an old man and a scorpion is the perfect example of how one should show kindness even to those who hurt us.

One morning, when passing a stream, a wise old man saw a scorpion. It was floating helplessly in the water. The old man knew that the scorpion will definitely drown if he does not do anything to save its life. Thinking quickly, the old man stretched out on a root of a nearby tree that has branched out into the river and bent down to rescue the drowning scorpion.

As soon as he touched it, the scorpion stung him. Instinctively, the old man withdrew his hand. He lost balance and almost fell into the stream himself. His hand became swollen and his face contorted in pain but he did not give up.

As soon as the pain subsided, he reached out for the scorpion again. This time he got to the scorpion but as he was pulling it out of the water, the scorpion stung him again. Due to the terrible pain, the old man let go of the scorpion and it fell back into the water.

The man thought for a while and broke off a branch from a tree. He put it in water to stop the scorpion from flowing away. The scorpion quickly climbed on the branch and the man safely pulled it out of the water.

A young boy standing by approached the old man and said, “Excuse me, Sir, I am curious to know why you risked your life for that malevolent creature? It stung you twice and caused you so much pain, yet you choose to save its life, why did you that?”

The old man smiled at his innocent inquiry and replied, “Dear boy, you are right! The scorpion is indeed a malevolent creature and it is its nature to sting but mine is to save, why shall I change my nature because of a scorpion?” he continued, “Don’t we always water a rose, despite its thorns? Similarly, we should love all creatures’ despite their flaws.”

If showing kindness to people is your virtue; do not change it for anyone. It is okay to look out for yourself. Take precaution if someone hurts you but always let your conscience be clear. As it is said, being kind is good but being kind without expecting anything in return is the best!
