You may have experienced times when life really had you struggling for your goals. You may have thought of several ways of getting through the hard times. Even right now, you are thinking about standing tall and fighting, aren’t you?
That’s the most evident solution to everyone’s problems. It is the easiest way out of your predicament! What you can’t always see is that sometimes, bending yourself and your will to the situation is the best thing for you to do.
You will be able to see that clearly through the exemplary story of the Oak and the Reeds.
A giant Oak tree stood near a brook where Reeds grew. Each day with passing winds, the Reeds bent in its direction, swaying this way and that. The Oak tree looked down upon the Reeds and said one day, “Oh, how sad it is that you cannot withstand the winds and have to bend to their will!”
The Reeds listened patiently but did not retort. They waited for the perfect opportunity which soon fell into their hands. The winds grew even wilder and the Oak tree finally fell because of the force with which they hit him. It fell in the brook among the Reeds.
Now was the time for the Reeds to return the favor. They said to him, “Do you see your flaw now? You stand tall and fight the wild winds. That is the reason you are broken, today! You refuse to bend to the flow of the winds. We bend with the wind and we are still here!”
The Oak tree felt really ashamed for what he had said to them, but for him, it was too little too late!
Moral: You can’t keep following the same values and principles that you have on day one. You must change according to situations and sometimes, consider options that were never really options.
The Oak tree was compelled by its nature to be the way it was. It was rigid and couldn’t bend when it wanted to. However, we as humans are not bound by nature. We have the capability to bend, change and improve ourselves if we wanted to.
The only thing that holds us back is ourselves! We don’t want to change. We don’t want to bend or improve! We often forget that we are not created as rigid as a tree. We are created with a lot of space for improvement, progress and growth. We just have to learn to use this space and fill it up with qualities that we didn’t have before. Our self-improvement can help us make much better decisions. We can easily choose for us the options that may seem unlikely to lead us to success. Eventually, our decisions are the only things that do!
As in the case of the Reeds, they had discovered entirely that bending according to the wind and not resisting it will help them survive for a long period of time. This quality of the Reeds allowed them to live a much longer life than the Oak tree!
