The Other Side - Aesop's Fable of Hares and the Frogs

The Other Side – Aesop’s Fable of Hares and the Frogs

Once upon a time, a drove of hares lived in a valley. Being timid by nature, they were spending their lives in misery. Always afraid of the unforeseen predators, they were living in gloom and despair. One day they decided to call a council.

Tired of living a life of fear, a hare exclaimed, “My dear fellow brothers, do you think this is a life worth living? We are constantly on the run; we never get a moment of peace. I am tired of being afraid all the time. I cannot keep living like this.”

Another hare seconds, “We spend days hiding away from the predators and nights are no better, we cannot eat in comfort and sleep in the fear of death; a rustling of leaves make us run for the hills. Our lives are truly miserable. It is to better die than to live in a state like ours!”

All the hares agreed that their lives are not worth living. They decided that it is better to die on their own terms than becoming prey to a wolf. After giving some thought to how they can end their lives, the drove of hares finally decided to drown itself in the neighboring lake. Giving up all hope in life, they ran in a frenzy towards the nearby lake.

At the same time, a score of frogs was enjoying the moonlight on the bank on the lake. Scared and confused by the drove of hares running towards them at full speed, the frogs jumped into the water at once.

The splash worked as an epiphany for the hares. One wise fellow among them cried, “Hold on brothers! However unfortunate we may think we are, there is someone worse off than ourselves. Look at the frogs, their life is worse than ours and they cannot even kill themselves by drowning!”

He continued, “We might be small and timid but we are still better off than so many other unfortunate souls, why then are we seeking to die when others have the courage to live? Life is not easy but it is granted once and we shall not throw it away. We shall not give up!”

The wise hare made his fellows realize that no matter how hard life gets, giving up is never an option. They decided to look at beings beneath them and thank God for the bounties and privileges that they have.

Life is not always an easy ride; there are good times and bad times. The important thing is to not lose hope and to keep believing in yourself. Your life is too precious to throw away. Always be thankful to God for whatever you have, even in the times of trouble. You only live once, but if you do it right, it is enough!
