The Golden Rules of Friendship
“Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art. It has no survival value; rather it is one of those things that give value to survival.” ~ C. S. Lewis
This famous quote by C.S. Lewis highlights the importance of friendship. There is no doubt that friendship adds meaning to life and that a life without friends is bound to get lonely and hollow. Friends make life a lot easier.
Even the happiest moments of your life may seem hollow if you lack a friend to share them with. True friends support you through the hardships and tolerate your shortcomings. When your world falls apart, these are the people who have got your back.
But what makes a friendship last? Let’s first turn to John 15:9-15, where Jesus said to his disciples:
“12My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13Greater love has no one than this that he lay down his life for his friends. 14You are my friends if you do what I command. 15I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father, I have made known to you.”
Jesus taught a model of friendship that shows that true friendship requires sacrifice. He exclaimed that a true friend will go as far as laying down his life for his friends. Some golden rules of friendship are discussed below.
Honesty is the Best Policy
A true friend is honest to the core. As a friend, it is your duty to stay honest and always be truthful to your buddy. A lie can ruin a friendship like nothing else! No matter what happens, never gamble on a friend’s trust by being dishonest with them.
Friendship Demands Equality
A friendship requires you to see your friends as you see yourself. A true friendship cannot flourish if differences like race, caste, creed and status are felt among the companions. A real friend will love you for what you are and not who you are.
Loyalty – The Essence of Friendship
A friendship means nothing without loyalty. Real friends will always stand up for you in the times of need. They support you and will defend you even when you are not present.
Laugh Together Cry Together
Friendship is not all about laughing and having a good time together. True friends stick through the hard times. They laugh together and cry together, but never abandon each other.
It’s all about Forgiveness
A friendship without the quality of forgiveness is bound to have an expiry date. Everyone makes mistakes and messes things up once in a while but you must try to overlook them to have a long lasting friendship.
Forgiving friends for their mistakes can strengthen the sacred bond of friendship.
Reciprocating the Love
You cannot expect your friends to be your best pals if you don’t return the favor. Be the friend that you want. Be there for your friends when they need you and you will always have someone to share a laugh with….. Love.
So what kind of friend are you? Remember, be a good friend if you want to get good friends!
