How to Survive Around Negative People

How to Survive Around Negative People

How to Survive Around Negative People

There are cosmic blackholes that suck matter. And then there are human blackholes that suck your positive energy. It gets increasingly difficult to work with such negative people in your team or your workplace. Their day isn’t complete unless they have burst your bubble at least twice or rained on your parade. Before they polarize you negatively too, you need to adopt a certain attitude to deal with the negative vibes that emanate from them. Ignoring pessimists is not going to solve your problems. After all, you will face many of their kind and you need a game plan to ward off these energy vampires.

Negative people tend to exaggerate issues and harp about the same problems for hours and days. They usually make a mountain out of a molehill. Lend them a listening ear if need be or offer advice and support. But if they continue talking about the bad side of the coin, then disengage. Try to switch topics. If they adopt a negative tune here too, then just hmm and haw throughout the conversation. You don’t have to contribute to the negativity.

Be in a Group

It can be extremely draining to converse with a negative individual. Even a 30 minute conversation can have you down in the dumps for 2-3 hours before the effect begins to wear off. Invite someone else in the conversation too. In fact, the more, the better. This way, the foul energy will be divided and you will not be the only one on the receiving end of the spectrum. More people can make the topic more diverse and light and may even bring some positivity in the pessimistic person.

It’s Nothing Personal

Often, you will come across people and colleagues who will tend to drop negative remarks on whatever you do or find faults, flaws and loopholes in your projects. If you observe these people closely, you will realize that this is how they behave with everyone, even with their friends. There’s nothing wrong with you, neither do they have an agenda against you. That’s just how they are—critical.

Don’t spend more time with them than necessary

You eventually become the person who you spend most time with. So be mindful of their company. Before they infect you permanently with pessimism, learn to say no where you can help it. Avoid hanging out with them often or hang out in groups so the effect is minimized overall.

If you delve deep, negative people appear negative as a means of coping with the lack of love and positivity in their life. If you feel you can make a difference in any area, try to reach out and help. Maybe they are struggling to achieve something but failing at it continuously and hence, the negative attitude. If you have identified the root cause and you think you can help, then go for it.

The art of becoming a better person

The art of becoming a better person

The art of becoming a better person

Life is a continuous process of development. We constantly learn and evolve from birth to the day we die. It is inevitable that people grow in life in response to the circumstances they have been through. But, what direction do they grow in – this depends on the individual.

The steady evolution in a positive direction is not something which comes naturally, but rather, great effort is often needed in order to achieve that. What’s more, not everyone knows the art of becoming a better person. But with practice, many can learn to develop the qualities that transform them into a better person every day. Some tips to develop those qualities include:

1)   Tame the Anger Within

Anger is not just an external reaction for something. Many times, it is much deeper than that. The feelings of anger can be deep rooted and hidden inside one’s psyche. This type of anger is not expressed by a mere shouting match or blows, but can be seen in the way an individual views the world. It becomes a part of the thinking process and can generate negativity and a pessimistic approach towards life. Therefore, expressed emotions are much better than bottled up feelings, as the suppression of emotions can create a sense of gloominess. Try to release those negative feelings and reshape your psyche.

2)   Practice Forgiveness

Holding grudges is the worst thing one can do for personal growth.  It largely hinders a person’s ability to let go of the past and live in the present. Doing anything new requires a fresh and positive approach, and so does becoming a better person. It is better to let go of any past grudges, revenge and animosities by practicing forgiveness. Forgive anyone who wronged you or betrayed you in any manner and with that – forgive yourself. A person cannot start a new life with a fresh approach if they are too focused on their past.

3)   Adopt Honesty

Many of the problems in the world today are due to the fact that people are not true to themselves and others. Do not lead people on and learn to be clear with your expressions and actions. Do not cheat or lie to others. The art of becoming a better person largely requires a component of purity and truthfulness in one’s character.

4)   Be Yourself

You should always be yourself, others are already taken! This statement is more than true because it emphasizes on the fact that you should never lose your edge. There is no doubt that different situations in life require adjustments and compromises, but in the process of adjusting, one should never lose their own personality. It is extremely important to be your own person in every situation, place and point that life takes you to.

5)   Flexibility – Openness to new experiences

Developing flexibility as a character trait is always beneficial as it is one of the most required traits in developing as a better person. What’s more, flexibility and adaptability does not only make life’s situations easier but also help in living with a better and happier attitude.

These are some of the many tips that help build up the required character traits for a better personality. The art of becoming a better person starts from your willingness to work on these aspects. The first rule is to be ready to accept the change!

“Make the most of yourself....for that is all there is of you.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Common Fundraising Mistakes to Avoid

Common Fundraising Mistakes to Avoid

Common Fundraising Mistakes to Avoid

The basic idea behind any fundraiser is to process the gathering of voluntary contributions of money or other resources, by requesting donations from individuals, businesses, charitable foundations, or governmental agencies. That said, fundraising is no walk in the park, and one must adapt to some keen guidelines with insights that can help you protect your fundraising project from making mistakes that jeopardize the entire process and makes it into a failure. Here are some definite DON’TS that must be avoided at fundraisers at all costs.

1.     Simply because your organization is supporting a good cause, it would encourage people to give

Getting donations isn’t about telling people to clear their conscience by supporting a generally good cause; it’s about attracting support the old fashioned way and that is: you’ve got to earn it. People are never readily acceptable to parting with their hard earned money and their reluctance is justified. However, anything that sparks their interest would encourage them to support your project and look at it as a challenge.

2.     Thinking that Support would be raised by others

In order to make a fundraiser successful, you have to follow the pebble in a pond principle. The ones responsible for making the greatest ripples should be the ones closest to the cause. This means the greatest of donations comes from the board of directors who then take responsibility of seeing the entire campaign through.

3.     Believing that since there are wealthy people present, money will be contributed

Simply because a person holds a lot of wealth, or is thought of in society to be a wealthy person, it is no reason to assume that he or she will donate aimlessly into your project. This is the thinking of amateurs and newbies in fundraising. Only when you involve people and make them believe in your cause would they actually even consider making an impact for the cause.

4.     Failing to evaluate and research valuable prospects

Meaningful gifts come from prospects only focusing on three elements, namely: linkage {connection to the company}, ability {to pay support}, and interest {in the cause}. Thus, ample research is required to pinpoint people who fulfill these underlying criteria of a meaningful prospect.

5.     Publicity makes money

Despite our best wishes, publicity doesn’t make money. In fact, those who are considerably the most serious of donors, see them as nonessential. Instead, donors prefer a more direct approach through verbal persuasion and formal documentation.

6.     Believing that money would be generated through the Multiplication principle

Those with little experience in throwing fundraisers would think that all donors would provide equal amounts of donations. However, even contemplating such a thought should be considered punishment by seasoned fund raisers. Imagine 7.5 billion Bill Gates donating a million each for the fundraiser.

7.     Failing to have deadlines

For things to run smoothly, in a frictionless and timely manner, deadlines are a must. Not only do they convey a surge of urgency and promptness but drive the team into action keeping them on their toes at all times. In other words, your team will be forced to take action keeping in mind the campaign schedule along with the target dates properly aligned.

Mistakes are proof that you are Trying

“We are products of our past, but we don’t have to be prisoners of it.”  ~ Rick Warren  The Purpose Driven Life: What on Earth Am I Here for?

“By seeking and blundering we learn.”  ~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

“Failure is instructive. The person who really thinks learns quite as much from his failures as from his successes.”  ~ John Dewey

“A teachable spirit and a humbleness to admit your ignorance or your mistake will save you a lot of pain. However, if you’re a person who knows it all, then you’ve got a lot of heavy-hearted experiences coming your way.”  ~ Ron Carpenter Jr. The Necessity of an Enemy: How the Battle You Face Is Your Best Opportunity

How Gratitude is the Way to Attain Happiness

How Gratitude is the Way to Attain Happiness

How Gratitude is the Way to Attain Happiness

Happiness is subjective and every individual perceives it according to their own capability. Some find happiness in money, a new job, or a trip, while others find it in the little things that occur daily, such as an approval, a confession of love, or even an apology. Gratitude is also one such means that makes a person happy. It is a state of being grateful for something, and the skill of counting your blessings rather than stating what is missing, and being happy and thankful for even the little pleasures of life.

A number of psychological and behavioral researches have worked on the concept of gratitude and have seen positive results and life improvements because of its practice. From resilience, to reduction in stress levels and building of stronger relationships – gratitude has positively affected all these aspects. It is present-oriented and creates positive energy between individuals.

When a person utters a word of thanks to you, it will make you feel productive and pleased for doing something that has benefited the other soul. Let’s discuss how being grateful can pave the way to your happiness.

Savoring the Moment

Mindfulness and gratitude go side by side. When a person starts living in the moment and appreciates all that they have, rather than worrying about things they don’t have, that is when they start acknowledging the goodness in their life. They also stop taking things for granted. It is a state of being content and satisfied with life’s circumstances irrespective of the problems. You will create happier and positive memories, which will further make you emotionally strong.

Brighter Side of the Picture

With gratefulness comes the stance of looking at the bright sight of the picture. It promotes optimistic thinking. Thankful people do not have the best of everything, but they tend to look at the positive aspects, and that is how the quality of their life improves.

Boosting your Self-Esteem

Whether you are at the giving end or the receiving end, thankfulness will boost self-esteem, self-worth, and self-confidence of both the individuals, which will gradually enhance their level of happiness as well. When people are readily present to help you, it will make you feel valued, and have a greater impact on your happiness level.

Paying it Forward

A lot of people tend to help others as a way of expressing their gratitude. Researches show that grateful people are more likely to lend a hand to others than the ungrateful ones. This will form a cycle and will carry forward the act of kindness caused by the emotion of gratefulness.

Emotionally, personally, socially, and health and career wise, gratitude brings the best in people. Acquire this gift in your life and become a better individual!

Are You A Creep? These Five Signs Say You Are

Are You A Creep? These Five Signs Say You Are

Are You A Creep? These Five Signs Say You Are

This world has a lot of creeps filled into it, and most of us have had a chance to interact with a few creeps here and there, even if we didn’t want to. There are many different kinds of creeps out there. For instance, there are obnoxious creeps, scary creeps, weird creep, and awkward creeps. If you think you are a creep but are not sure, then these five signs can help you decide:

1.     You Stare

Starring makes people uncomfortable and there is no doubt about it. Even if people do not notice that someone is starring at them, there will be other people in vicinity who will notice.

2.     You Ask Questions That Are Awkward

Most people only like sharing personal matters with their family and close friends. Creeps however like to gather as much personal information as possible from other people, and if you like doing that too, then you may be a creep. It is important that you get to know a person properly before you really start asking personal questions.

3.     You Stalk

While modern technology has made the art of stalking effortless, it does not mean that stalkers are appreciated in society. There is a limit to stalking. For instance, if you keep track of someone’s daily life, then you might be drastically crossing the limits of stalking. There is no need for you to keep a track of everything that is going on in someone else’s life. Live your life first and then come to someone else’s life.

4.     You Do Not Value The Concept Of Personal Space

When it comes to social interactions, you need to keep in mind that everyone has their own personal space around them that should not be crossed. This personal space can be greater in the case of friends and acquaintances while lesser in the case of family and closer friends. It can be extremely awkward for people if you cross their personal space, and if you do so regularly, then you might just be categorized as creepy.

5.     You Are A Little Too Eager

There is certainly a huge difference in friendliness and freakiness. While it is perfectly fine to hang out with someone from time to time, if you get too attached or see yourself making a plan with then every day, then you might just be desperate and creepy. There is a limit to how much people want to see your face, and if you cannot respect that, then you might as well not make plans to begin with.

If you feel that one or more of these signs relate to you, then don’t worry. There is always time to fix your behavior. The first step towards any change is knowing that there is a change that need to be made. Upon acknowledgement, you can start taking concrete steps towards that change and become a better person. There is always hope for even the creepiest of people.

“I had a dream about you. I’d just invented a meltless popsicle, and you’d just created melted ice cream in a can—as a substitute for soup. ” ~ Jarod Kintz

Therapy: A Powerful Tool To Heal

Therapy: A Powerful Tool To Heal

Therapy: A Powerful Tool To Heal

No matter what you are struggling with, seeking therapy can be a great way to heal yourself. Live can be really difficult sometimes. For instance, being in an accident or having to face the death of a relative that a person was really close to can be really hard for people, and most do not easily overcome such tragedies, especially on their own. When left untreated, such incidents can lead to numbness, anxiety, and severe depression.

While some people may know the cause behind their uneasiness or depression, there are others who have no clue as to why they have such a terrible perspective towards life. Therapy: A Powerful Tool To Heal can help solve all such identified and unidentified struggles that people might be facing.

The Benefits Of Therapy

There has been research, which shows that verbally communicating your feelings to another person can relieve you in many ways. Therapists are educated individuals who have the ability to understand your thought processes, behaviors, and moods. They get an individual to talk by asking them different questions so that they can understand the basic reason as to why you are suffering mentally. In essence, they extract your core problem and try to fix you with it. This, coupled with the basic human need to share their feelings helps therapists fix their mental state.

The best part about therapy is that it can help an individual with any problem, no matter how major or minor. Many times, an individual is simply facing a mental block due to which they are unable to achieve certain goals in life. Therapy also helps in removing those mental blocks so that you can lead your life freely and without any difficulty.

Additionally, therapy can help you figure out your purpose in life. Once you have identified your purpose, you are bound to be happier and heal automatically.

Most people think that therapy is only for people who are facing some sort of mental illness. However, this is not the case. Therapy can benefit just anything and anyone, no matter what their mental condition is like. Like previously mentioned, talking about ones feelings and emotions can benefit them greatly, and an even greater benefit is obtained if someone is there to give valuable pieces of advice. Seeking therapy never hurts. It only fixes your issues in a way that will benefit you greatly in the long run.

“Writing is a form of therapy; sometimes I wonder how all those who do not write, compose, or paint can manage to escape the madness, melancholia, the panic and fear which is inherent in a human situation.” ~ Graham Greene

“Before you can live a part of you has to die. You have to let go of what could have been, how you should have acted and what you wish you would have said differently. You have to accept that you can’t change the past experiences, opinions of others at that moment in time or outcomes from their choices or yours. When you finally recognize that truth then you will understand the true meaning of forgiveness of yourself and others. From this point you will finally be free.” ~ Shannon L. Alder

“Some seek the comfort of their therapist’s office, other head to the corner pub and dive into a pint, but I chose running as my therapy.” ~ Dean Karnazes

Why Helping Others Makes You A Better Person

Why Helping Others Makes You A Better Person

Why Helping Others Makes You A Better Person

The best people in this world are the ones who uplift others, help them in any way possible, and encourage them to succeed. Because the act is so positive in nature, it ends up making the person doing the task much happier and satisfied with life. We are social beings, which means that we need to be equally concerned with other people’s needs and hardships as well. If we remain aloof, then we are most likely to feel depressed ourselves.

The Benefits Of Helping Others

Showing compassion and understanding towards other people around you ultimately works in your favor because you end up connecting with them on a deeper level. With more understanding comes greater friendship, and therefore you will have more people around you who will love and adore you. This is a selfless act that makes the helper feel good about themselves and increase positive energy around them. It emotionally uplifts a person in ways that can never be achieved with fame or money. It is for this reason that so many celebrities take part in numerous charity events and causes.

Additionally, helping others helps you give a renewed sense of purpose in life. You become more thankful and start appreciating the things that you are blessed with. when you are filled with gratitude, you stop obsessing about the things that you do not have in life and start investing more time into the things that are already present all around you.

Making This A Regular Habit

With so many benefits, helping others should become a regular habit. And the best part about this act is that you do not have to join a certain cause to help others, you can even do so in your daily life. For instance, if you encounter an elderly man struggling to take his groceries to the car, then you can offer a helping hand. The result of this great gesture will be that the man will appreciate and remember what you did for life, thereby incorporating positive feelings about you towards them.

Helping others does not take a lot of time out of your schedule, and you can definitely practice being nicer on a regular basis, even to those people that you do not like too much. Always remember that everyone is living a hard life, and it definitely pays to show a little kindness to everyone around you.

“The best antidote I know for worry is work. The best cure for weariness is the challenge of helping someone who is even more tired. One of the great ironies of life is this: He or she who serves almost always benefits more than he or she who is served.” ~ Gordon B. Hinckley

11 Creative Ways to Write About Character

11 Creative Ways to Write About Character

11 Creative Ways to Write About Character

The qualities that are used in describing an individual are character. Often times, we hear people say, that woman is this or that. The words that are employed in picturing you by others reflect your character or your personality. You either have a good character or a bad one. Experience has shown that even the so called bad people with bad characters appreciate good characters and deeds. Here are some ways character can be described:

  1. Character is consideration. The tenderness shown to others at the detriment of one’s comfort portrays a character. If you consider others before yourself that is good character and if you put yourself first before others that is selfishness and it is bad.
  2. Character is the compassion shown to strangers when no one is around to praise and reward you. People that display good characters don’t bother for publicity and applause. It is rather an innate thing.
  3. Character is the habit of combining humour with honesty. Most humorous people are termed unserious and cheat because they are smart enough to sway others for their selfish gains but with the combination of honesty, it is a good character.
  4. Character is that aura of confidence displayed unconsciously both in the public or private. This virtue comes naturally unlike people who are good in A and bad in B. Character is the fruit that comes out the same to different people at different times.
  5. Character is a sense of responsibility that is displayed with respect and humility. A good character does not show off its talents. Rather, the talents show it off. Responsibility is discharge with a good sense of dutifulness instead of reward or gain.
  6. Character is the attitude of ability coupled with flexibility. This is a rare combination as most people ability with rigidity in coded symbols. They are not easily interpreted and understood. A good character is endowed with lots of ability which is expressed with flexibility.
  7. Character is having a sense of citizenship. Patriotism, loyalty and responsibility are closely related together. A citizen is loyal and discharges duty with good sense of responsibility. Character seeks the development of a nation and not her ruin. This is shown either at home or abroad.
  8. Character is trustworthiness. The ability to be honest, even in seemingly difficult situations that warrant corruption, is character. Only few people can be trusted with financial commitments.
  9. Character is an attractive personality that has a magnetic force. This personality is appreciated and sought for by everyone. But, only very few people have it because it is not learnt but innate. Anyone can decide to turn a new leaf at some point in time to have a change of behaviour. In this case this inner force is transferred to that that person but it can’t be faked.
  10. Character is having a good reputation and outstanding record of good performance in interpersonal relationship. Character is useless on its own without relating with others because your character is judged and assessed by the people you relate with.
  11. Character is an emotional balance in time of provocation.

"The essential thing is not knowledge, but character." ~ Joseph Le Conte "The great hope of society is individual character." ~ William Ellery Channing

“Character is like a tree and reputation is like its shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing.” ~ Abraham Lincoln

William Ellery Channing
