5 Massively Overrated Careers to Avoid

Raise your hands if you wanted to become a doctor after watching the hit TV series “Grey’s Anatomy” or “House”. While the actual medical profession is nowhere near as glamorous or entertaining as the TV show, people think that being a doctor is all about that white coat, intriguing cases and on-call duties with live action.

What they don’t know is the amount of studying, examinations, grueling work and insomniac years of residency that is behind the signature white coat and the stethoscope. And for what it’s worth, life as a physician is not as rewarding either. Unfortunately, being a doctor is one of the many careers that you will label “overrated” once you know the details.

Here are a few career paths that are hugely overhyped, and unless you really connect with them on an intimate level, you’d be wise to drop the idea of pursuing them.

Elementary Teacher

The Fantasy: Summer vacations, weekends, public holidays and oh, short timings till 3 PM, are the alluring perks of the profession. And then there is this fantasy of molding young minds and raising a noble generation of students.

Median Annual Salary: $187,199

The Fantasy: You are the know-it-all doctor who saves lives topped up with all the fancy imagery that TV shows have been feeding you all your life.

The Reality: Physicians have to work overnight and on long shifts. They have to be on-call 24/7 and have to respond to emergencies wherever they may be. Sure, they earn a lot. But when do they get the time to spend and enjoy their earnings? No!

Chief Executive

Chief Executive

The Reality: The position is very stressful, requires long working hours and frequent travel.

Median Annual Salary: $61,370

The Fantasy: You love making cartoons and this sounds like a creative job that you will enjoy.

The Reality: Working in the industry is not all fun. Besides, becoming the next Walt Disney is not an easy target, and the pay is not worth it either.

Median Annual Salary: $114,300

The Fantasy: Another profession with an interest fuelled by TV series. You picture lawyers to be witty and powerful, fighting trials with an interesting twist.

The Reality: The major part of being a lawyer involves writing tedious documents, meeting deadlines and dealing with consequences for making a mistake.

Whatever your dream career may be, conduct a thorough research before treading the path.

2.     Take Your Dad Travelling

If your dad barely gets a vacation, as work occupies him, you need to tell him to take a few days, use their vacation days, or go with you on road trip on the next upcoming long weekend.

3.     Take Your Dad to a Cooking Class

If your dad is an art and museum buff, take him to an art gallery or a play.

5.     Take Your Dad to a Concert

If you know your father’s favorite band is playing in your hometown next, surprise him with tickets. For dads who do not like to go to concerts, but prefer soft and live music with dinner; take him to a diner that offers that.

6.     Take Your Dad to a Movie

With so many remakes of old classic movies coming up, you can treat your dad to one of those. Find out which movie your dad wants to see and take him there.

If you are not sure what your dad wants to do on his special day, ask mom or ask your dad directly.

5 Ways To Build Your Creative Confidence

There is a difference between being creative and being clever. A clever student can grasp things easily and apply them. They are seen whenever results are out for the top in their class. Creative students may not be atop in their classes but can do things in extra ordinary way. They always find a new simpler way of doing things. Then there are students who do not know where they belong. They may not be clever but in a way creative yet cannot believe in themselves that they are. They always assume that their work is not good enough to be accepted as creativity. Whereas they can produce something big, they need that reassurance from their hearts to compel them to do and present their projects. If you fall under this category, the following points might help you build yours!

  • isolate the problem

Look for that one thing that makes you feel low or lose confidence in yourself. Once you get it, look into the contributing factors and find out what causes them. If possible, tell someone close or someone you trust about it. This will help you to be relieved.

  • explore possible solutions

Try to cut the causes of the problems. Where it is not possible, improving on them can help a great deal. Get to find out the positive things that will outweigh your negative side. And if you cannot rid it, look for better ways to live with it in a way that it can’t affect your confidence.

  • believe in yourself

Encourage yourself that you can do it. Rule out any negative emotions coming your way. Surround yourself with friends that believe in you and congratulate whenever you achieve something. Set a goal, work towards it. Should you achieve it reward yourself. Do not cease to remind yourself of the many talents and abilities you possess.

  • practice

Group all those projects that you are not confident about. Do and redo them until you get positive comments from your teacher/mentor. Ask assistance from those who know how to do them smartly. Try to emulate how they do it after some time you will have mastered the skill and gained more confidence.

  • stay positive

Stay cheerful and smile always. Take compliments even if you feel you don’t deserve them. Encourage others too who have the same problem as you. Above all, shun  and avoid self pity like a plague and never disapprove yourself in whatever you do. It is your work anyway done to your level best. Good luck!

5 Types Of Food To Avoid When Pregnant

5 Types Of Food To Avoid When Pregnant

Pregnancy news is usually good news to any couple. It means blessings and more company. It gives a sense of responsibility and completeness. Not so good to the mother though. The habit of eating for two is a no, no, no.  For it means everything going through that mouth must be well scrutinized to determine if it will be good for the baby too. Not all foods can pose danger to your unborn baby but there are some that are worth every needed careful selection such as:

Raw meat

If you have a taste for raw steak, then you will have to hold back your craving. Uncooked or not properly cooked meat carry bacteria E.coli and Salmonella which both pose danger to you and the baby. Ensure that any raw meat or poultry is properly cooked to kill these bacteria.

Soft pieces of cheese

Even though they are readily available and tempt so much on the shelves, they are known to be very harmful to your health and that of the unborn baby unless they are pasteurized or soft imported ones. One must always check clearly whether they are pasteurized or not. To mention a few, keep off from the following; blue cheese, feta and brie.

Sea food

All that which contain mercury should be avoided at all cost. These are the likes of shark, sword fish and king mackerel. Their level of mercury impair the baby’s nervous system. Some of them that have lower quantity of mercury like tuna are recommended but not more than 8 ounces a week. Same thing to crabs and shrimps. All these categories should be avoided.

Caffeinated drinks and food

They are found often in drinks than food though. Caffeine is known for lack of sleeplessness in the new born, higher heartbeat rates and its connection to miscarriages. This means that a pregnant mother should not take coffee and sodas.

Uncooked eggs

Runny or half boiled eggs should be avoided. Deserts that are made at home must be well cooked because they contain eggs. Raw products such as ice creams and salad dressings must not contain eggs in the ingredient list.

Lunch meat

Lunch meat otherwise known as deli meats contain listeria that passes through the placenta to cause miscarriage. Stay away from sandwiches, hot dogs and cold wraps or at least warm them in the microwave to kill listeria.

In addition to these, keeping cooking surfaces clean and free from bacteria at all times is paramount. One should wear gloves when handling raw meat and food as cross contamination of bacteria may occur.

What Life Lessons Can You Learn from Harry Potter?

What Life Lessons Can You Learn from Harry Potter?

What Life Lessons Can You Learn from Harry Potter?

When you step into the world of Harry Potter, your imagination takes over and you find yourself as a student in Hogwarts, the magical we all wanted to go to when we were young. In fact, like most diehard Harry Potter fans, you probably waiting anxiously for the letter from Hogwarts, only disappointing yourself when it didn’t. All we know is the people who grew up reading Harry Potter took away with them priceless entwined in the plot. Some of the lessons that Harry and his friends taught us were:

1.     Don’t Live in the Past, Live in the Present

Don’t live in the past, live in the present, as the past is unchangeable, but the future is yet to be made. Harry Potter, the boy wonder, could have lived the rest of his life under the cupboard of the his aunt and uncle’s house. He could have sulked at his luck for losing his parents at a young age, but did he? When he received the opportunity to go Hogwarts, he immediately took it and you know why? He wanted to take the reins of his future, shaping it the way he wanted it to be down the line, and if you ask me, it was great!

2.     Do Not Let Your Fears Get the Best of You

You need to confront your fears just as Ron did with the spiders and Harry did with the Dementors. In their case, facing their face was pertinent if they want to save themselves or their friends. In your case, it is not a matter of life and death. So, what are you waiting for? A signal? Conquer them to succeed in life!

3.     Money is Not Everything

Money is not everything so do not make it a focus of your life. You need to be happy and content with what you have, even though Ron wasn’t, and work hard towards the life you really want. On the topic of Ron, take a minute to reminisce the gifts Ron’s mother sent to him on the holidays and occasions such as the sweater and the ancient robe for the ball.

4.     You Are Never Alone, Unless You Want to Be

When you begin to shut people out, you will find yourself alone, but the minute you open yourself up to others, you will greeted with warm laughter and smiles. You want to the person surrounded by people who genuinely care for you. Even though Harry Potter did not have parents, he had his two best friends, Ron and Hermione, Dumbledore, Hagrid, Sirius, and in a surprising way, Snape. If you have read Harry Potter or watched the movies, you will get why we mentioned Snape.

5.     You Have to Learn to Confront Your Battles Alone

We already know that Harry fought most of his battles alone, but you another person who did that. It was Neville Longbottom who was the first person to defy Voldemort when he asked people to join him. It is time you stop looking towards others for help and learn to fight your own battles, just like Harry and Neville.

What lessons did you learn from Harry Potter? Share with us your thoughts.

"Some of the furor that surrounded a Harry Potter publication was fun." ~ J. K. Rowling

~ Daniel Radcliffe

“I guess my guilty pleasure would be listening to the British audio versions of the ‘Harry Potter’ books.” ~ David Sedaris

“It’s always at the back of my mind that acting might come to an end for me when Harry Potter finishes. I don’t know if I’m good enough to have a long career. I’ve got a bit of an inferiority complex about my acting. My self-esteem is quite low in that sense.”

~ Rupert Grint

What is the Google’s New Mobile Friendly Algorithm?

What is the Google’s New Mobile Friendly Algorithm?

What is the Google’s New Mobile Friendly Algorithm?

On April 21st, Google launched an algorithm update which changed the way businesses looked at search engine rankings. In recent times, Google had been making minor tweaks to its ranking criteria by prioritizing highly valuable content and ignoring everything else. Due to the effectiveness of SEO strategies, businesses were only optimizing their content to make it SEO friendly. This made the content’s quality suffer, which wasn’t good for the customers. As we know, Google has always used a user-centric approach than anything else, and that is why it introduced this new mobile-friendly algorithm.

Let’s take a look at what this new update includes:- What is the Google’s New Mobile Friendly Algorithm?

A Futuristic Approach

We are well aware that mobile technology has taken over the world (almost completely). Everyone makes use of their smartphones and tablets to surf the internet. The reason for this increased use is that mobile devices are convenient to use. Therefore, having a desktop version of your website is not going to entertain the majority of the market, which will make you lose lots of customers.

This new update by Google will change that. Because every online business is in a race to get better ranks on the search engine, they have to have a mobile-friendly website. There is no doubt that this usage of mobile devices is only going to grow in the future and businesses that do not have websites that could work on these devices will not going to get many visitors. Therefore, Google has made this major tweak to its algorithm in order to make websites appropriate for future.

Mobile-Friendly Websites Get Top Ranks

If you think that Google’s new algorithm change is a big fat joke, then search for some brands on Google’s search engine. When you hit enter, you will find mobile-friendly websites on the top most ranks.

When a customer looks for something on the internet, they are most likely to click on the links that are on the top ranks and they hardly go to the second or third page. Therefore, if you want your brand to be visible, you need to keep up with this update, which will increase your website’s traffic.

Enhanced User-Experience

The websites that provide a good user-experience are the ones that get viewed the most. Internet users do not like to waste time on websites that are poorly designed and do not offer easy navigation. On top of that, the majority of users that are surfing internet through their mobile devices are unable to get a good experience when they open a website that is not mobile friendly.

If businesses design a responsive website, they will be able to deal with all these issues that their customers are facing. This will open new doors for businesses to attract more traffic and improve their conversion rate.

The beauty of a responsive website is that it is available on the same website URL. It helps in turning the user-experience around by making people enjoy their surfing experience without coming across issues in readability, size, and navigation on mobile devices.

A Selection of Google Quotes

“Google is my best friend and my worst enemy. It’s fabulous for research, but then it becomes addictive. I’ll have a character eating an orange, and next thing I’m Googling types of oranges, I’m visiting chat rooms about oranges, I’m learning the history of the orange.” ~ Liane Moriarty

“My job as a leader is to make sure everybody in the company has great opportunities, and that they feel they’re having a meaningful impact and are contributing to the good of society. As a world, we’re doing a better job of that. My goal is for Google to lead, not follow that.” ~ Larry Page

“The rise of Google, the rise of Facebook, the rise of Apple, I think are proof that there is a place for computer science as something that solves problems that people face every day.” ~ Eric Schmidt

10 Fundamentals about Customer Service You Didn’t Learn in School

10 Fundamentals about Customer Service You Didn't Learn in School

10 Fundamentals about Customer Service You Didn’t Learn in School

Customer service is fundamental to the success of any business oriented organization because it is the only thing that can keep your customers coming. Companies should invest heavily in their customer services for efficient service delivery to customers by satisfying them. Most thriving companies today have learnt this secret and have made enough budgets to invest in their customer service by adequate trainings. One of the reasons why companies fold up is their inability to sustain the interest of their customers in this world of competition. The following are the fundamental principles guiding customer service which can only be learnt from experience.

  1. Customers will prefer to patronise a company where their needs are attended to promptly and not where their precious time will be wasted. People should be around and available to attend to customers.
  2. A good listening ability without distractions. Most customers know when you are just cajoling them. They also understand when they are listened to with rapt attention. No one wants to be looked down upon. Listen to their complaints and act appropriately.
  3. Arguments don’t work. Just listen to their complaints and act accordingly. A good customer service is provided with politeness because you can’t argue without raising your voice and sometimes shouting. Remember “customers are always right”.
  4. Be professional and principled. As you attend to different customers, you will discover some have some things in common with you that may tempt you to treat them preferentially. A good customer service treats all customers equally without partiality or favouritism.
  5. Selfless service. No matter how good natured you are, a time will come when some challenges will make you want to transfer aggression or vent your spleen on any available person, that is when you need to forget yourself and be professional. A good customer service is the one rendered selflessly.
  6. Time consciousness. Everything needed for maximum satisfaction should be made available without wasting the time of the customers. This way you win your customers’ confidence.
  7. Be consistent. Inconsistency is similar to not doing anything good. A good customer service will ensure customers are attended to promptly every time. If you are inconsistent in rendering efficient customer service, your customers will know and you will lose their confidence.
  8. Phone calls ethics. Respond to your phone calls promptly with a broad smile as they detect your smile and sincerity from your voice. Don’t keep customers call for too long before answering. Let their case be treated professionally.
  9. First impression is important. How you render your customer service to those patronising your company for the first time will determine their continuous coming or not. Give them special attention by answering their questions.
  10. Get their details. There should be a record of the personal details of each customer for record purpose and for involvement. At festive periods, messages can be sent to them for compliments. The company can use this medium for adverts to update the customers on new arrivals and products in stock. This is a customer service that has dual purpose of satisfying the customer and rewarding the company in return.
