Life: A Do-it-Yourself Project

William Henley cannot have worded it better when he said, “I am the master of my fate and the captain of my soul.” If you want to live your life a certain way, you will have to proactively work for it. Instead of mulling over your dissatisfactory life, consciously build the life you want to live :- Life: A Do-it-Yourself Project.

It is strange to think that sometimes we simply fail to realize that we are the authors of life and that we are continuously writing our story through our actions.

The well-known story of the old carpenter is an example of how we build our lives without realizing; consequently, without putting in the much-needed effort.

The story talks about an elderly carpenter who was ready to retire. The contractor was sorry to see his hardworking worker depart and asked the carpenter to design one last house for him. The carpenter agreed but his heart was no longer in his work. He worked half-heartedly and resorted to sloppy workmanship.

When the carpenter finished his work; the contractor came for inspection and surprised the carpenter by handing him the keys of the house. “This is your house, a gift from my side”, said the contractor.

“Alas! What a shame, I would have built the house differently if I knew I was building it for myself”, thought the shocked carpenter.

In one way or another, we all can relate to the story of the old carpenter. We all build our lives, moment by moment, often putting less than our best. The choices we make today will determine our tomorrow because life is a DIY project.

Choose to make a conscious effort towards building a better life, day by day.

Simply ponder upon and answer the three questions discussed below to bring a change in your life.

1.    What do you want to do with your life?

This can easily be the most important question of your life. What you want to do with your life decides the course of action for your future. Once you are clear about your goals in life, you can work on achieving them.

2.    Why is it important?

A goal without a reason is a goal with an expiration date. You are likely to abandon a project that you started without a real reason. Understanding the importance of why you want to achieve certain things in life is important because it gives the motivation that you need to keep working hard towards your goal.

3.    How are you going to do it?

In order to achieve something, you will have to work for it. Once you know what you want to change in your life, start thinking about how you are going to do it. Identify the qualities you need to adopt, for example, do you need to become more confident and appreciative? Do you need to be more consistent or assertive?

Plan how you are going to take up these qualities and work them to your advantage. Set deadlines. Work out a plan and stick to it!
