5 Types Of Food To Avoid When Pregnant


Pregnancy news is usually news to any couple. It means blessings and more company. It gives a sense of responsibility and completeness. Not so to the mother though. The habit of eating for two is a no, no, no.  For it means everything going through that mouth must be well scrutinized to determine if it will be for the baby too. Not all foods can pose danger to your unborn baby but there are some that are worth every needed careful selection such as:

Raw meat

If have a taste for raw steak, then will have to hold back your craving. Uncooked or not properly cooked meat carry bacteria E.coli and Salmonella which both pose danger to and the baby. Ensure that any raw meat or poultry is properly cooked to kill these bacteria.

Soft pieces of cheese

Even though they are readily available and tempt so much on the shelves, they are known to be very harmful to your health and that of the unborn baby unless they are pasteurized or soft imported ones. One must always check clearly whether they are pasteurized or not. To mention a few, keep off from the following; blue cheese, feta and brie.

Sea food

All that which contain mercury should be avoided at all cost. These are the likes of shark, sword fish and king mackerel. Their level of mercury impair the baby’s nervous system. Some of them that have lower quantity of mercury like tuna are recommended but not more than 8 ounces a week. Same thing to crabs and shrimps. All these categories should be avoided.

Caffeinated drinks and food

They are found often in drinks than food though. Caffeine is known for lack of sleeplessness in the new born, higher heartbeat rates and its connection to miscarriages. This means that a pregnant mother should not take coffee and sodas.

Uncooked eggs

Runny or half boiled eggs should be avoided. Deserts that are made at home must be well cooked because they contain eggs. Raw products such as ice creams and salad dressings must not contain eggs in the ingredient list.

Lunch meat

Lunch meat otherwise known as deli meats contain listeria that passes through the placenta to cause . Stay away from sandwiches, hot dogs and cold wraps or at least warm them in the microwave to kill listeria.

In addition to these, keeping cooking surfaces clean and free from bacteria at all times is paramount. One should wear gloves when handling raw meat and food as cross contamination of bacteria may occur.
