It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had not seen rain in almost a month. The crops were dying. Cows had stopped giving milk. The creeks and streams were long gone back into the earth. It was a dry season that would bankrupt several farmers before it was through.
Every day, my husband & his brothers would go about the arduous job: trying to get water to the fields. Lately it had involved taking a truck to the local water rendering plant and filling it up with water. But severe rationing had cut everyone off. If we didn't ...

| One of my favourite Christmas activities is to read a good book about the meanings and interpretations of this season. This year, the book which won that spot for my
attention is “The World Encyclopedia of Christmas”. Here’s how it begins – “In the Czech Republic a child gazes at a carp swimming in her bath tub; in Portugal a man is trying to make a turkey drunk. In Ethiopia men are shouting and waving hockey sticks; in New Zealand a family is barbecuing on the beach. In Denmark they ... |
Who Started Christmas?
This morning I heard a story on the radio of a woman who was out Christmas shopping with her two children. After many hours of looking at row after row of toys and
everything else imaginable and after hours of hearing both her children asking for everything they saw on those many shelves, she finally made it to the elevator with her two kids. She was feeling
what so many of us feel during the holiday season time of the year.
Overwhelming pressure to go to every party, every house-warming, taste all the ...

The man slowly looked up. This was a woman clearly accustomed to the finer things of life. Her coat was new. She looked like she had never missed a meal in her life. His first thought was that she
wanted to make fun of him, like so many others had done before.
“Leave me alone,” he growled.
To his amazement, the woman continued standing. She was smiling -- her even white teeth displayed in dazzling rows. “Are you hungry?” she asked.
“No,” he answered sarcastically. “I’ve just come from dining with the president. Now go away.” The ...

A HOMELESS MAN'S FUNERAL

As a bagpiper, I play many gigs. Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper's
cemetery in the Kentucky back country.
As I was not familiar with the backwoods, I got lost and, being a typical man, I didn't stop for directions.
I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight. There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch.
I ...

A farmer had some puppies he
needed to sell. He painted a sign advertising the 4 pups. And set about nailing it to a post on the edge of his yard. As he was driving the last nail into the post, he felt a tug on his overalls. He
looked down into the eyes of little boy. 'Mister,' he said, 'I want to buy one of your puppies.' 'Well,' said the farmer, as he rubbed the sweat off the back of his neck, 'These puppies come from
fine parents and cost a good deal of money.' The boy dropped his head for a moment. Then reaching deep into his pocket, he pulled ...

Story of Appreciation

One young academically excellent person went to apply for a managerial position in a big company.
He passed the first interview, the director did the last interview,
made the last decision. The director discovered from the CV that the youth's academic achievements were excellent all the way, from the secondary school until the postgraduate research, never had a
year when he did not score good grades.
The director asked,
"Did you obtain any scholarships in school?" the youth answered "None."
The director asked,
" Was it your father who paid for your school fees?"

The woman took a quick peak at her hair as she rushed out of the bathroom. As usual, she would apply her make-up in the car.
“Shoes,” she cried out automatically.
“Everybody needs shoes.”
She glanced into the kitchen to see her husband buttering the toast they would eat on the road. “C’mon guys,” she pleaded. “I need you dressed and out the door, right now. We’re late.”
The two small children marched down the hallway in various stages of undress. “Honey, can you pick up little Sarah?” the woman asked. “I have a committee meeting at 3 P.M.”
THE WAY CHILDREN SEE THINGS
HONESTY: My son Zachary, 4, came screaming out of the bathroom to tell me he'd dropped his toothbrush in the toilet. So I
fished it out and threw it in the garbage. Zachary stood there thinking for a moment, then ran to my bathroom and came out with my toothbrush. He held it up and said with a charming little smile,
"We better throw this one out too then, 'cause it fell in the toilet a few days ago."

OPINIONS: On the first day of school, a first-grader handed his teacher a ...

NEED WASHING?

A little girl had been shopping with her Mum in Kroger. She must have been 6 years old, this beautiful red haired, freckle faced image of innocence.
It was pouring outside. The kind of rain that gushes over the top of rain gutters, so much in a hurry to hit the earth it has no time to flow down the spout. We all stood there, under the awning,
just inside the door of the Kroger.
We waited, some patiently, others irritated because nature messed up their ...

If I hold it for an hour, I'll have an ache in my right arm.

An Obituary.. Interesting BUT TRUE!
(Allegedly!)
An Obituary printed in the London Times - Interesting and sadly rather true.
Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth
records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.
He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:
