7 WAYS TO BEAT YOUR ADDICTION

Addiction is the slavery of a certain habit such that when one try’s to cease from it, trauma results. It can be a practice that endangers your life yet you cannot stop because you are used to it. Most addictions are caused by caffeine, drugs or habits like pornography. Since addiction can never benefit you in anyway, it is good to stop it, after all, addiction have more disadvantages than advantages. Everything in excess is poison or so the adage goes. So how do you conquer addiction?  Below are some ways to get rid of it.

ACCEPT THE PROBLEM

This would be the first step to a thousand miles. Accepting that you have addiction problem will trigger you to stop it because every time, your conscience will remind you that you are doing something wrong. If you have not yet accepted the problem, then you will not feel the need to stop.

MAKE UP YOUR MIND TO CHANGE

After you have discovered about the problem, definitely you will want to change. Now, this is usually better said than done. I suggest to help you do this, list all the cons of your behaviour. This could be extra money spent, alienation from friends, wastage of time and so on. Develop some hatred towards the habit and decide that you will part ways since it is the cause of all the problems you listed.

OUTLINE THE CHANGE PLAN

Addiction is very strong such that quitting it might take months or even years depending on the level of addiction and the individual’s willingness and adherence to change. Write down the step by step action you will take and the duration each step will cover. It is advisable to have smart (small, measurable, achievable, realistic and time bound) goals.

COMMUNICATE

Tell your friends, parents and everyone you interact or associate with most of the time about your decision to change. They will give you the support you need in terms of keeping you busy and sharing the positive information about the wise decision you made. Your partners in the addiction crime will keep off when they know that you have disowned them openly. This will be a plus to you and a chance to move on.

GET A NEW HOBBY

It will be prudent to allow something to take up the time you used to do the habit. You can dedicate yourself to learning new skill, volunteering or playing a game. This will distract you from trailing your mind to the old habit.

ERASE ALL THE TRIGGERS

See to it that you avoid all the places, friends and things that will remind you of the habit even if it means changing your diet, routes or starting all over again.

STAY FAITHFUL TO YOUR DECISION

Never contemplate on going back for the final one for it is a trap! You may never free yourself. So ensure that yours is only an onward move.

A Selection of  Quotes about Addiction

“I have absolutely no pleasure in the stimulants in which I sometimes so madly indulge. It has not been in the pursuit of pleasure that I have periled life and reputation and reason. It has been the desperate attempt to escape from torturing memories, from a sense of insupportable loneliness and a dread of some strange impending doom.” ~ Edgar Allan Poe

“We are addicted to our thoughts. We cannot change anything if we cannot change our thinking.” ~ Santosh Kalwar

“I admire addicts. In a world where everybody is waiting for some blind, random disaster or some sudden disease, the addict has the comfort of knowing what will most likely wait for him down the road. He’s taken some control over his ultimate fate, and his addiction keeps the cause of his death from being a total surprise.” ~ Chuck Palahniuk

“Every form of addiction is bad, no matter whether the narcotic be alcohol, morphine or idealism.” ~ C.G. Jung
