How to Never Be Trapped into a Bad Purchase Again

The urge to buy new things is an explicit example as to how human psychology operates regarding our perception: that a solution to a problem is attaining something desirable at first. Since buying and purchasing things comes natural to all of us, so should the art of buying also; but alas, this isn’t true. Purchasing things can be tricky, and just as consumption of food requires a carefully thought out and specific recipe, buyers too should equip themselves with the proper tactics to be a good purchaser. Here are some general tips that can guide you to be an expert on buying things without getting yourself into a corner or a bad purchase ever again.

1.     Negotiation can be for anything

Not all price tags are the final verdict of price; careful inquisition could lead you to available coupons and other discounts which can be applied. This lowers the total cost of purchase considerably.

2.     Get hold of the manager or the owner

Most sales clerks on minimum wages don’t really care about sales, and your purchases don’t affect the sum of money going in their pockets. So find the person at the store who will directly benefit from the sale. In ideal situations, you will want to speak with the owner of a small store, or a manager in bigger retail stores. Their compensation is most often directly tied to how much a store sells and perceived customer satisfaction.

3.     Keep a Poker Face

Don’t give off your side of the bargain even before the war of negotiations starts. Keep a poker face till the very end of the deal or you will end negotiating against yourself. Always keep your cool and wait for the other party to make an offer. When asked, limit your enthusiasm while unfavorably comparing it to other products. Then suggest that you might still be interested for the right price.

4.     Bundle up items

Add up items to get the best price. A seller might be willing to lose a customer on a single item, but when it comes to multiple transactions, the price becomes a whole lot amiable.

5.     Barter what you can whenever you can

A little creativity can go a long way at times. See if the seller is interested instead in an item which is in your ownership. Considering making a trade to lower the amount you have to pay.

6.     Be willing to walk away

Irrespective of whether it is a car, or a television set, or even the house of your dreams, if the seller isn’t willing to come down to the amount you’d be willing to pay at most, then force yourself to walk away from the deal altogether. Many a times, a strong stance like that makes a seller comply as he doesn’t want to lose the sale.

7.     Use written communication if possible

Anything in white and black is considered law and easily understandable even with immense language barriers such as in foreign market places. Producing records of negotiation gives you a leverage you might not have experienced while making a deal in a long time.
